As the most populated borough of New York City, Brooklyn has plenty to do, plenty of culture, and plenty of sites to see. The Brooklyn Bridge and Prospect Park are only two of the iconic places in this borough.

Brooklyn is also the second-largest borough, with 77 neighborhoods and 2.7 million people living there. It’s not hard to see why many people would want to live in Brooklyn if they’re moving to New York City.

So, what is it like living in Brooklyn? This guide will tell you everything you need to know about living in one of New York’s most famous and iconic boroughs.

Where Is Brooklyn?

Brooklyn sits on the west end of Long Island. It’s southeast of Manhattan, separated by the East River. To the east of Brooklyn is Queens, which is the borough’s only neighbor by land.

The Brooklyn Bridge connects Downtown Brooklyn to Lower Manhattan and goes over the East River. Coney Island, the Brooklyn Museum, and Prospect Park are other iconic attractions located in Brooklyn.

Popular Neighborhoods in Brooklyn

As stated, there are 77 neighborhoods in Brooklyn, each with their own cultural makeup and diverse personality. These are only five of the most popular neighborhoods.

This borough is one of the best places to live because it has areas that are more family-friendly and ones where young people like to work and play.

Williamsburg

When people think of neighborhoods in Brooklyn, many think of Williamsburg. This iconic and famous neighborhood has a bustling nightlife and a vibrant music and art scene that draws many young people to live here.

Williamsburg is also close to Manhattan, which can be a good option if you commute to work. The neighborhood has many housing styles for young people and families alike.

Brooklyn Heights

Brooklyn Heights attracts both families and young professionals. It’s a comfortable neighborhood with tree-lined streets. Plus, with close access to the subway, you can easily get around the city.

Brooklyn Heights has plenty of bars, restaurants, and parks that serve as entertainment for the neighborhood’s residents and visitors.

Park Slope

A comfortable and walkable neighborhood, Park Slope is a go-to for those looking for a comfortable and family-friendly place to live. Park Slope has tons of historic brownstones.

Park Slope borders Prospect Park, and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is nearby. There are lots of coffee shops and eateries that draw people to live in this quiet neighborhood.

Cobble Hill

Cobble Hill is a quiet neighborhood that’s near Downtown Brooklyn. You’ll enjoy a laid-back neighborhood with close access to shopping and entertainment.

This neighborhood is often considered a community neighborhood. Many live in Coblle Hill while working in Manhattan. Cobble Hill is a little piece of suburbia in the city.

DUMBO

DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass and is a neighborhood that sits on the East River. Once an industrialized area, DUMBO is now a chic place to live, eat, and work.

The neighborhood is home to many technology companies as well as eateries and art communities. DUMBO is an expensive area with homes, condominiums, and apartments often boasting luxury accommodations and prices.

Schools in Brooklyn

Many families decide to call Brooklyn home. As parents look for where to move in Brooklyn, they have to consider the schools in the area for their children. Brooklyn has public, private, and charter schools.

Brooklyn is separated into geographic districts, and each district has multiple elementary, middle, and high schools. In general, Brooklyn schools are highly rated, and students do well academically.

Cost of Living in Brooklyn

The cost of living in Brooklyn is 66% higher than the national average, with housing 190% more expensive than the average. Food, goods, and services are also more expensive than the national average.

The average rent in Brooklyn is $3,558, with the average apartment being 660 square feet. Rent prices vary by neighborhood.

For example, the average rent in Flatlands is $1,830 a month, Flatbush is $2,194 a month, and Bushwick is $3,417 a month.

Home costs in Brooklyn, on average, are $848,000, while the medium home price sold is $760,000.

Moving to Brooklyn

If you’re planning to move to Brooklyn, it’s best to start planning early. The city, in general, is sought after, and Brooklyn is a highly desired neighborhood. Begin searching for neighborhoods and apartments well in advance.

Book Brooklyn movers to make the process more seamless. Many older buildings don’t have elevators, and parking can be tricky, so it’s best to leave the moving process to professionals whenever you can.

Moving in the summer months, May through August, provides better weather; however, costs can be higher. Winter months, such as February, tend to have lower costs associated with them but worse weather.

Things to Do in Brooklyn

There is no shortage of iconic sites and fun activities to do while living in Brooklyn. If you make this borough your home, you’ll find plenty of things to explore and things to do.

Walk Through Prospect Park

Prospect Park is a favorite attraction for those in the city. Take a walk through the park or sit on the water for a relaxing moment.

Try New Restaurants

Brooklyn is known for its world-class restaurants. There are community staples and local joints. Or try renowned upscale places for a night out.

Explore the Nightlife

Bars, clubs, and live music are always going on in Brooklyn. Spend your weekend nights exploring the scene.

See a Basketball Game

The Brooklyn Nets play at the Barclay Center and provide an exhilarating way to spend an evening. The Barclay Center also hosts concerts, performances, and other events.

A Vibrant Place to Call Home

There is a reason that many people believe New York City is one of the greatest places to live. The city is vibrant with diverse cultures and rich history. There are tons of things to do, places to eat, and attractions to see.

Brooklyn is the home to many of these qualities. Many people prefer to be living in Brooklyn than anywhere else in New York City.
