Q My local QuickTime or MP3 file is not playing locally. (This may be accompanied by a security error message.)

Mozilla has a security restriction on playing local files when opening them from a website. To get around this, you need to allow Veotag to access your local file system. The way to do this depends on the version of Mozilla you are using (of course!).

For the latest versions of Mozilla, we have created a plugin that will resolve this issue. Click on this link to install this plugin:

Veotag Mozilla Security Patch.
After installing the plugin, please go to your Tools menu option and click on a menu item labeled "Veotag QT security fix".

Thanks go to the developers of ChromEdit Plus.

We know of no solution to the local file security restrictions in Safari. Please try using Firefox.

Q My file plays locally but not in the veotag player

veotag currently supports WMV (Windows Media), FLV (Flash) and MOV (QuickTime) files. Progressive download files such as AVI, MPG, MP4 will play as well in the associated player. If your file is not working, you should try to re-encode your file to one of our supported types. To re-encode into WMV go to Microsoft Media Encoder . For Flash encoding you can use Adobe Flash 8 Professional or use the Sorenson Media Squeeze product.

Q Clicking on a tag in the player does not advance the video (or audio)

Servers have two ways of giving the user a file: streaming download and progressive download. When a file is provided by a streaming server, then when you click a veotag (or move the slider) you can jump right to the part of the video you want. A progressive file can only start at the beginning and play until the point that you want to see.

For example, if you have a two hour video and want to jump to a point one hour into the video, you have to wait for the first hour to download on a progressive video. In a streaming server you might see a brief buffering message and then immediately get to the point you want. If your file is hosted on a progressive server (YouTube's free service or Google Video are both examples of this) then you should consider moving to a streaming server if you have a long format video (longer than a few minutes). veotag provides this as part of its paid service. To learn more about what kinds of file types are supported, see here also.

Q How do you install the Windows Media Player-ActiveX plugin for Firefox?

For a more detailed explanation of the ActiveX plugin for Mozilla browsers as well as troubleshooting the plugin installation, please visit this page.

WARNING! Before you install the ActiveX plugin, if you use the Adblock Extension, you must make sure that the setting for OBJ-TABS is disabled. Otherwise, your system will not run the ActiveX control.

  • In order to install the ActiveX plugin, the Windows Media Player plugin must be installed and working. To check that the plugin is installed, see: 'How do I see if Windows Media Player plugin is installed?'.

  • Right-click one of the following links and save it to your desktop depending on which version of Firefox you use:

This is Adam Lock's ActiveX Plugin for Firefox. There are no versions of the plugin that are known to work with any non-official Firefox builds.

  • Once you have saved the .xpi file to your desktop, open Firefox and drag the .xpi file you just downloaded into the Firefox window.

The plugin will appear in the Extensions window while installing, but not once installation is complete -- this is not an extension and so will not be listed in the Extensions window.

  • When the installation is complete, restart Firefox.

Q How do you check the ActiveX Plugin Installation in Firefox?

  • You can test the Windows Media Player ActiveX installation on this page:
ActiveX Test - Windows Media Player

If you can play both the audio and video players, then the ActiveX and Windows Media Player plugins are installed correctly.

  • If they do not display properly, type about:plugins into the address bar and check for the following entry:

  • If this entry is not present, then reinstall the ActiveX plugin.

Q How do you see if Windows Media Player plugin is installed in Firefox?

  • For the ActiveX plugin to work, you need to you have Windows Media Player 9 or 10 installed. These can be found here.

  • You can test the Windows Media Player plugin here.

If you see video on the test page, then the Windows Media Player is installed.

  • If you DO NOT see video on the test page, you need to check that Firefox can detect the Windows Media Player plugin.

To do this, type about:plugins into the address bar. This will display Firefox's plugin information. If the following entries are present, then Windows Media Player is installed correctly:

  • * The "Microsoft® DRM" entry with the filename npwmsdrm.dll might be called "Microsoft Corp. DRM Netscape Plugin" instead.

  • If any of these entries are missing, the Windows Media Player plugin is not properly installed.

Q I have PowerPoint slides that I would like to include in my Veotag presentation. What is the best way to do that?

If you have a PowerPoint file and wish to export the slides into JPG images to be used in Veotag's SlideShow feature, we have created a utility that helps you do that. To install this utility click on this link, and run the installation package: Veotag PowerPoint Export

After installing this utility you can access it by going to your Programs, and there will be a new Veotag folder which will contain a shortcut for this utility.
