No matter whether you are just starting out you are an experienced project manager, there is a lot to consider when you are at the beginning of a project. Especially if you are the one that has been placed in charge. Not only do you have a client and a manager to answer to, but you are also at the head of a team of people and likely only have limited time to complete the task. No pressure though. There can be a lot of things going on and so it helps to be organized. Here are a few helpful hints to get you on your way.

Use software

Long gone are the days of having to rely on people’s memory to remember what you told them and when the deadline is. Nowadays, there are many software programs out there that can not only give your team set deadlines but also provide an online space where they can communicate, leave work and collaborate on an aspect of the project. Software programs like procore allow your team to be in more contact than ever and allow you to oversee it all from the comfort of your computer.

Utilize smaller deadlines

Having one ultimate deadline loom over you can be enough to motivate some people, however, others need to be managed on a more personal and constant level. That is why it can be useful to set minor deadlines that break the project up and allow you to ensure that you are on track for the final deadline. Not only can you hold your team accountable, but you will be able to see a problem developing much quicker and put an end to it before it becomes a big problem later down the line.

Communicate priorities

Ensuring that everyone is on the same page is so important for a big project. You need to clearly demonstrate your priorities at the beginning of every week so that your team knows what they need to deliver. You can show them what is most important and give them advice on where to spend their time. If you have an aspect that is really important for your client, then you will want to focus on that rather than other parts of your project that can be delayed. As long as you are all working towards the same priority, the task will be completed in no time

Be adaptable and ready for change

Sadly, no matter how much you plan a project, you will likely hit a bump in the road. The trick here is not to panic and also not to follow your plan blindly. Make sure that you take the time to stop, gather your time, and reassess. This will not only help your team stay on track but will overcome any problem that you face.

Managing projects

It is not an easy skill, but it is worth having. Being able to lead a team for a big or small project is essential for any business to succeed. All you need to do is prepare in advance and you will have no problem. Remember, you don’t need to do everything on your own, use your team.
